O'Brien started his career at youth team Ruislip Rangers. He later joined the youth team at Queens Park Rangers. In February 2008 he signed for Portsmouth after also having trialed for Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Sunderland and Arsenal.[3]
While at Portsmouth, he was on the bench for several Premier League games in the 2009–10 season, and suffered relegation with the club. In the 2010–11 season, he was definitely promoted to first team, being assigned with #31 jersey. However, O'Brien failed to make one appearance with the club, and then he joined Eastbourne Borough on loan in 9 September 2010.[4] He then made his debut on the club two days after, in a 4–0 heavy defeat against Barrow.[5]
He then returned to Portsmouth in October, but his contract with the club was terminated and he become a free agent.[6]
After three months as a free agent, O'Brien signed a contract with Barnet in January 2011.[7] He made his Barnet debut on 8 January 2011 in their 3–1 win against Bradford City.[8]
